About Kristin Rand

Creator of Coping to Creating™ and the Rand Realms of Living Model™

I believe there is a difference between coping with your life and consciously creating it.

For many of us, coping begins innocently. We find people, behaviors, substances, habits, or distractions that help us feel better, feel connected, escape discomfort, or meet a need. Sometimes those strategies serve us. Other times, they become patterns that keep us stuck.

My own journey—and ultimately the creation of Coping to Creating™ began with wanting to understand why we can continue reaching for something even when we know it isn't creating the life we want.

My background has taken me through several very different areas of study. I have educational backgrounds in genetics, psychology, and law, along with training in life coaching, sobriety coaching, somatic healing, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), transformational coaching, and yoga. I also bring more than a decade of experience in adult education, which has taught me the importance of taking complex ideas and making them understandable, relatable, and—most importantly—usable.

But Coping to Creating™ didn't come from education alone.

It was also shaped by lived experience.

Through my own experiences with unhealthy relationship patterns, coping behaviors, stress, and the process of trying to understand and change deeply ingrained patterns, I began noticing something important: what looked like very different struggles often had something in common.

Underneath them was frequently an attempt to feel better, avoid pain, find connection, feel safe, gain validation, or meet another basic human need.

That realization changed the questions I was asking.

Instead of only asking:

“How do I stop doing this?”

I began asking:

“What am I feeling?”
“What am I reaching for?”
“What need am I trying to meet?”
“Is the way I'm meeting that need helping me create the life I actually want?”

Those questions became part of the foundation of Coping to Creating™.

The Rand Realms of Living Model™

As I explored the similarities between unhealthy relationship patterns, addictive behaviors, and other forms of attachment, I developed the Rand Realms of Living Model™ as a way to visualize where we may be in different areas of our lives.

We can feel trapped or dependent in one area, stuck in a repeating cycle in another, comfortable and safe somewhere else, and experience tremendous freedom in another.

The goal isn't to label ourselves.

It's to develop enough awareness to recognize where we are—and enough intention to decide where we want to go.

That work also led to the Wheel of Needs™, a tool for looking beneath our behaviors and relationships to consider the needs we are trying to meet and whether there may be healthier, more balanced ways to meet them.

Together, these ideas became the foundation of Coping to Creating™.

Why I Created Coping to Creating™

I created Coping to Creating™ because I wanted to offer people something I believe is often missing from conversations about unhealthy behaviors and relationships:

A practical framework without shame.

Shame can keep us focused on what's “wrong” with us.

Awareness allows us to become curious about why a pattern exists in the first place.

My approach combines education, personal reflection, and practical tools to help people recognize patterns, explore the emotions and needs beneath them, and consider healthier ways of responding.

I don't believe creating change is simply about eliminating a behavior.

Often, the more important question is:

What was that behavior, relationship, or attachment doing for you—and how can you begin meeting that need differently?

That's where the shift from coping to creating begins.

From Coping to Creating

Today, I bring Coping to Creating™ to life through my writing, workshops, and educational programs for teens and adults.

My role as an educator is not to tell people who they should become. It is to give them frameworks and tools that can help them better understand themselves, recognize the choices available to them, and become more intentional about what they create next.

Because our past patterns don't have to automatically determine our future ones.

We can become more aware of what we're feeling.
We can understand what we're reaching for.
We can recognize the needs underneath our choices.

And then we can ask:

What do I want to create instead?

That's the heart of Coping to Creating™.
